Locomotive Simulation
Major railroads have invested billions of dollars in locomotives, but often do not have adequate planning tools to manage this expensive resource. Innovative Locomotive Simulation Optimizer (ILSO) will help you meet the locomotive planning demands of your railroad.

LSO simulates locomotive movement across a rail network and keeps track of four major resources involved in locomotive management: locomotives, trains, terminals, and maintenance shops. It mimics a real-life environment in which:

  • train travel times are random variables,
  • locomotives periodically (every 92 days) visit shops for quarterly maintenance,
  • locomotives break down at random intervals and go to shops for repairs, and
  • shop repair and terminal processing times are random variables.
  • The system keeps track of the status, inventory, and detailed plans for individual trains, locomotives, terminals, shops and uses this data to calculate key statistics and plot a variety of charts. The heart of ILSO is an optimization-guided simulation system that can simulate six months of locomotive operations within only a few minutes. This engine has been packaged into a friendly Access-based decision support system that includes several detailed reports and charts.

ILSO can enable you to perform the following types of analyses:

  • assess the impact of locomotive fleet size on on-time train originations,
  • determine the impact of shop locations and shop capacities on locomotive utilization,
  • identify terminals with frequent shortages of locomotives and determine potential solutions,
  • determine the number of locomotives to put into storage when business is slow, and
  • understand the impact of strategy or policy changes on the system performance.
  • ILSO is available for demonstration, pilot studies, and licensing.
