Hump Yard Manager
Hump yards are nerve centers for railroads. A typical railcar spends more time in yards than moving on trains. Accordingly, efficient hump yard operation planning greatly increases network efficiency and reduces operating costs.

Innovative Hump Yard Manager (IHYM) is a planning software that will help you understand, analyze, and optimize resource utilization at a hump yard.

IHYM is a railcar-by-railcar discrete simulation system that takes, as an input, the train arrival and departure schedules, blocking plans, and terminal track geometry. The simulation is constrained by all available resources, including the yard crew, locomotives, and railcar inspector schedules.

IHYM is a desktop-based decision support system that enables the user to:

  • easily create scenarios through a user-friendly interface,
  • run simulations within minutes, and
  • view the movement of railcars through a yard using visual animation.
  • Various reports and charts enable the user to perform detailed analysis on any solution. The user can create multiple scenarios and compare results across a changing array of inputs. IHYM is very efficient and can simulate one month of hump yard operations within a minute.

    IYHM has the following applications:

  • it evaluates the capability of a yard to process a given level of traffic arriving and departing according to a
  • prescribed schedule,
  • it provides utilization and productivity statistics for a yard and by the type of resource,
  • it projects average railcar dwell time as a function of the train plan and yard resources, and
  • it quantifies the financial benefits to support capital investment decisions.
  • IHYM is available for demonstration, pilot studies, and licensing.
