| History |
Innovative Scheduling, Inc. was founded in 2000 by Dr. Ravindra K. Ahuja, a world-renowned researcher, academician and a Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Florida, Gainesville.
Professor Ahuja wanted to solve complex and large-scale transportation scheduling problems using innovative operations research and computer science techniques. Working with airlines, railroads and other logistics companies, he developed novel algorithms, applied them to transportation business problems and created solutions that worked effectively in the real world.
In 2004, Innovative Scheduling received its first Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to build a decision support system for railroad blocking problems and started hiring full-time employees.
The following year, the company received another SBIR grant from the NSF to build a decision support system for train schedule design problems. These two grants provided the seed funding to develop several new methodologies, along with the information technology platform to build decision support systems. The company immediately began commercializing the systems built through these NSF grants, and invested this revenue to fund the research and development of new decision support systems.
In 2007, Innovative Scheduling established its Development Partnerships Program to build custom decision support systems and entered into several partnerships with CSX Transportation, one of the largest freight railroads in the United States. The systems created for CSX in these partnerships include building a Locomotive Simulation Optimizer, Yard Simulation Optimizer and Locomotive Shop Router. Each of these endeavors resulted in exceptional success stories for CSX and tens of millions of dollars were saved.
Innovative Scheduling now licenses our current suite of decision support systems, builds custom software applications for clients, develops new systems by funding our own internal research, and provides consulting services through the use of its decision support systems.
